Australian Doctors International (ADI) has been facilitating health care delivery to rural populations in PNG for 20 years. ADI now invites expressions of interest from junior doctors who are interested in pursuing a career in rural health. 

Working with ADI for 6-12 months in Western Province, West New Britain or New Ireland offers an opportunity to improve skills and gain experience working in rural hospitals as well as on outreach health patrols with a multidisciplinary team. On outreach patrols, you could expect to provide health care, promote disease prevention, deliver health awareness to rural communities and support the professional development of isolated rural health workers.

YWAM Medical Ships – Australia

YWAM Medical Ships – Australia (YWAM MSA) is committed to engaging with remote rural communities in Papua New Guinea through use of Medical and Training Ships.

YWAM MSA works in partnership with the PNG National Department of Health and supports implementation of the National Health Plan 2011 – 2020, particularly in isolated maritime districts. The Ship currently serves in the Southern Region of the country.

Staff working with YWAM MSA are volunteers donating their professional skills and are drawn from PNG and around the world. Programming includes mobile primary health care clinics (with a strong focus on maternal and child health), dentistry, optometry, ophthalmic surgery, water and sanitation, health promotion and community empowerment.

Short-term opportunities are available to serve on an outreach voyage lasting around 2 weeks. There are also options to spend longer onboard.
